French M1866 Yataghan Chassepot Bayonet
French Yataghan sword bayonet for use on the 11mm M1866 Chassepot needle-fire rifle. It can also be used on the M1874 Gras rifle. This example was made at the French State Arms plant in St. Etienne and is dated June 1868. The scabbard appears to be for an M1842 bayonet, but fits it well.
The spine is worn but still visibly marked with "Impale de St. Etienne Juin 1868". The ricasso is marked on one side with a Crown over M in a circle, and another indistinct circular mark. The other side of the ricasso has what looks like a figure 8 that's half hidden under the guard.
The crossguard is marked on one side with "E 2134" and a 4, J and 8 on the other. There are four distinct proof marks on the hooked quillion.
The blade has some black grease present and a light grey patina. The brass grip has wear appropriate to its age and use.
