British Pattern 1856/58 Enfield Sword Bayonet
A sword-bayonet made for the Model 1853 .577 calibre Enfield 2-Band Infantry Short Musket. These were used by British forces as well as being exported in large numbers to to both Union and Confederate armies in the American Civil War. This example was likely used by British forces based on the markings. There is the remains of what looks like a "33" painted on the mouthpiece of the scabbard along with a broad arrow on the frog stud. The scabbard is unfortunately missing the ferrule at the tip.
The curved yataghan blade is bright and free from rust. The ricasso is marked with a Crown over F, Crown over L8 and Crown over L16 on one side, and B 14 on the other. There is the Roman Numeral VII stamped into the blade edge near the quillion. The number 742 can be seen on the pommel.
The leather grips are quite worn but the press stud moves nicely. The leather on the scabbard is quite dry and I believe the mouthpiece was moved up about an inch so the scabbard would cover the blade more fully despite the missing fuller.
These bayonets are quite scarce so all in all a nice example to add to a collection or to pair up with your 1853 Enfield!
