William Laing Cased 47 Cal. Top Hat Percussion Pistol
A beautiful William Laing Top Hat Percussion Pistol chambered in 47 caliber and fitted in a custom built pistol box with a quilted maple top.
The screw-off barrel is decorated around the muzzle with an engraved leaf design. The action is extensively engraved with foliate designs, and is marked "Wm LAING" on the left side and "EDINBURGH" on the right. The checkered wood grip has shrunk somewhat with age, and as a couple of stable cracks on the left side. The inset cartouche is un-engraved.
Strong action holds both half and full cock. Folding trigger comes out properly when the hammer is pulled back, and snaps back in nice and clean!
A beautiful transitional piece, Top Hat or 'cap guard' pistols were a brief innovation that used a hinged cover to hold the percussion cap in place before the adoption of a percussion hammer with a shroud.
Comes with a small brass powder flask, barrel wrench, cap tin and two cast lead round balls. There's a small write-up pasted in the lid with a brief history of William Laing as a gunmaker.
Pistol measures 6" long. Case is 1-" x 6.75" x 2 1/8".
