Antique Flintlock Eprouvette Powder Tester
An antique flintlock eprouvette or powder tester, made to test the explosive force of black powder by filling the chamber full and then firing it.
This is a more rare configuration of a powder tester, with the almost 'elephant trunk' configuration attached to a wheel engraved with the numbers 1 to 10. It's kept secure by means of a very stiff leaf spring.
Nicely engraved on either side of the action with a sort of Empire military motif, and on the back strap with three flowers stacked on a spiral. Plain wood grip is in good condition with no cracks and just the right sort of patina and wear.
This piece has been restored sympathetically by an extremely experienced black powder gunsmith. It came to us missing the top clamp for the flint, so has had one made for it that fits in so well, you would have a hard time believing it wasn't the original.
Holds full and half cock and the trigger functions beautifully. Trigger guard does wiggle a tiny bit.
All in all an absolutely lovely piece for the black powder enthusiast!
Measures 169mm long.
