Soapstone Carving : Otter Eating Fish by Simiuni Taqulialu Arnamissa (1931-1987)
A fantastically detailed soapstone carving of an otter eating fish carved by Canadian Inuit artist Simiuni Taqulialu Arnamissa (1931-1987) of Puvirnituq/Povungnituk, Quebec.
With works displayed in the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull and the Museum of Anthropolgy at UBC in British Columbia, Simiuni Taqulialu Arnamissa was a significant Canadian artist known for his carvings depicting traditional Inuit life. Marked on the bottom with 'Semeonei' and his disc number (E9-960).
This piece is one that needs to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. From the little fins and gills on the fish in the otter's mouth, to the little bit of tail on the rock, the attention to detail on this is absolutely phenomenal. Add to that the beautiful veining and warm glow of the soapstone, I have to say that photos just don't do it justice! It would be a stellar piece in any art collection.
