Brown Mfg. Co. Ballard Dual Ignition Rifle
Brown Mfg. Co. Ballard Dual Ignition Rifle marked 'No. 46' indicating it's chambered in .46 Rimfire.
Bore is clean with strong rifling. Silver blade front sight, and tip up rear sight that has lost its longer arm. Lever is a touch stiff, but all mechanical parts function well including the under-barrel manual ejector.
Because rimfire cartridges were not reloadable, some Ballard rifles were equipped with both firing pins and a nipple for a percussion cap. The idea was that you could reload your rimfire cartridge, drill a small hole in the base and use a percussion cap as your ignition source.
Wood stocks have been sporterized, and are in good cosmetic condition. Metal parts show some light surface pitting, most apparent on the underside of the barrel.
Marked on the left side of the action "BROWN MFG.Co. NEWBURYPORT. MASS. / BALLARD'S PATENT / NOV. 5. 1861" with an additional patent printed on the left side of the hammer spur.
A fabulous Civil War era Canadian Antique Status rifle, this would be right at home in any antique arms collection.
